Background Info
The examination process in Kenya and the region has been an interesting one. Initially the purview of expatriates and missionaries, access to amateur radio for locals was very limited, mainly due to the challenges of certification or the purchase of equipment. But over the decades, this has changed.
Initially, Kenyans were certified through Kenya Post and Telecommunications, which was facilitated through the City and Guilds Certification (this certification later morphed into the Harmonised Amateur Radio Examination (HAREC) with the evolution of the European Union.
Over the years examination has remained a challenge, leading to a decline in new members joining the society and inhibiting growth within the region. Fortunately, this changed with the gracious partnership of the South African Radio League (SARL) in South Africa and the Platte County Amateur Radio Group (PCARG) in Missouri, Kansas, giving us access to two examinations that are recognised by the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA).
Through PCARG, ARRL, and support from the CA, the advent of remote and online examinations has greatly enhanced exam accessibility and enthusiasm in seeking amateur radio certification. We believe that Kenya is now on track to grow its amateur radio community and will soon be in a place to support other enthusiasts in the region.
Currently the RSK supports three licensing options.
- Kenya Amateur Radio Examination (RSK)
- The ARRL examination (in collaboration with PCARG)
- The HAREC examination (in collaboration with SARL)
